When Tony Lovette purchased one of the largest custom drapery businesses in the Mid-Atlantic in 2002, the longtime shading and lighting expert was buying more than a workroom. He was buying an opportunity to expand the business into cutting-edge home design service.

"My goal was to build a company that would enhance designers' creativity and help them quickly and efficiently choose and implement window decor and fashion," says Lovette.

Starting with Specialty Drapery, a business that has been in operation since 1967, Lovette created The Specialty Group, which currently offers interior designers, architects, and builders (the trade only) window treatments of all types, including cleaning and repair and total automated motorization.

These are marketed through four distinct businesses under The Specialty Group umbrella- Specialty Drapery (a custom drapery workroom and provider of ShadeWorks custom shade program), Specialty Cleaners (a drapery and stage curtain dry cleaner and repair specialist), and Specailty Stage Curtains under the brand names LuXout and Custom Stage Curtain Fabricators.

As the original business, Specialty Drapery remains a wholesale-to-the-trade, haute couture drapery workroom that employs over thirty service and fabrication professionals. In addition to custom soft treatments, Specialty Drapery is a one-stop shop for interior design and architectural community for high-quality custom window treatments.

This includes custom fabricated fabric treatments, ShadeWorks brand shade systems including motorization by Lutron QED technology and Specialty Woods faux and real wood blinds. Ongoing personalized service distinguishes The Specialty Group from similar businesses.

"We don't just process orders," says Lovette. "We take the time to talk with our designers/dealers, fabricate what they need, and share our expertise to make their jobs easier."

A good portion of the follow-up care and repair is provided by Specialty Drapery Cleaners. The cleaning division is dedicated exclusively to the cleaning and repair of window treatments as well as household and corporate linen for many of the larger corporations in the metro Richmond area.

The Specialty Group's newest and fastest-growing component is Specialty’s Stage Curtain Business under the brand names LuXout and Custom Stage Curtain Fabricators.

The Stage Curtain business was previously known to our company for providing curtains that were too large for them to make in their facility and was purchases by Specialty in 2008. The LuXout trade marked brand of Stage Curtains as well as the private label brand of Custom Stage Curtain Fabricators have clients covering North America was well as a small amount of overseas business.

This addition not only is a great addition to Specialty on its own merit but opens up a much more vast distribution channel for all of The Specialty Group’s products.

Not only is The Specialty Group regularly featured in trade and consumer design magazines, their work has won them international accolades.

The workroom took top honors at the prestigious International Window Fashion Expo, held annually. They captured a first-place award for commercial treatments in 2004 and first-place recognition for Combination Treatments in 2006, in addition to an honorable mention in the Specialty Treatments category.
